FUNCTIONAL BREATHWORK

gentle yet powerful Support for Daily life

Functional breathwork is a trauma-informed, approach to retraining how you breathe. Unlike other types of breathwork that chase intensity, this is about choice-centered, trauma-informed support for both in the moment regulation and long-term nervous system resilience. Functional breathwork can also help you move between nervous system states - from the calming to the energising and everything inbetween.

How Your Session Unfolds

Functional breathwork here is an invitation to move away from intense and overwhelming breathwork practices and towards physiological safety. Many of us unknowingly navigate life with chronic overbreathing which is a subtle, constant stress response that depletes our CO₂ levels and keeps the nervous system on high alert. By shifting how we breathe in daily life, we communicate safety to the body, building a foundation for resilience that supports our own neurobiology.

When we focus on the biomechanics of breath, we can increase heart rate variability (HRV), which is a key marker of your body’s ability to recover from stress and overwhelm. Instead of forcing "peak experiences" like other kinds of breathwork, we steadily retrain our breathing patterns to improve cell oxygenation and signal to your brain that it is safe to relax. These small, accessible adjustments offer a way to shift your state in real-time, meeting your body with kindness as we rebuild systemic resilience.

Together, we can explore various functional tools including energising, focusing, balancing, and down-regulating breath patterns. These simple but effective methods build resilience without flooding your system. You can lean on these practices during moments where you want more energy, better focus, or when you are in sensory overwhelm or feel trapped in a difficult stress response and need to shift.

Our sessions generally begin with a check-in, external orienting, and grounding, then 1-3 guided breathwork patterns. Afterwhich there is space for reflection as well as techniques to integrate and ground you before the closing the session.

Choice is at the heart of everything we do. We will never push for perfection, potentially overwhelming breath patterns, or "correct" breathing. Instead, we offer low-pressure invitations to explore what actually feels supportive and helpful for you.
